Located in Plaisance, in the Grand Port district, 48 kilometres southeast of Port-Louis and in the immediate vicinity of Mahébourg, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport is Mauritius's only international airport. It is named after the country's first Prime Minister (1900-1985), regarded as the father of Mauritian independence, achieved in 1968.
Plaisance Airport, its other name, opened in 1942 as a British Royal Air Force military base during the Second World War, before being converted to civilian use just after the war. It was renamed in 1987 in honour of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. In 2019, it welcomed 3,884,056 passengers, making it a strategic hub of the Indian Ocean.
In response to the growth of Mauritian tourism, a new terminal was inaugurated on 11 March 2013 with the arrival of flight MK053 from London-Heathrow. Designed by ADPI (Aéroports de Paris Ingénierie) and built by China State Construction Engineering, the 57,000 m² building, with a capacity of 4 million passengers/year, draws inspiration from the ravenala, the traveller's tree, a tropical plant emblematic of the island.
The architecture, with its wave-shaped roof of glass diamonds, incorporates a sustainable-development dimension: photovoltaic panels on the canopies, rainwater harvesting, facades treated to limit solar heat gain. The terminal has 5 contact aircraft stands, including 1 capable of accommodating the A380, 52 check-in counters, 6 baggage carousels and 9 jet bridges.
The airport is the home base of the national carrier Air Mauritius, which operates its flights to Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania from here. It is also served by Emirates, Air France, British Airways, Corsair, Condor, Turkish Airlines, Saudia, Edelweiss Air, Air India, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines and many others. Around twenty airlines serve more than 35 destinations in total.
Mauritius has neither a train nor a metro. All travel from the airport is by road. The road network is generally in good condition: the M1 motorway quickly connects the airport to Port-Louis in 45 to 60 minutes. Secondary roads to the seaside resorts (Grand-Baie, Flic-en-Flac, Belle Mare) add 30 to 60 minutes depending on the season.

The current terminal spans three levels. The ground floor houses customs services, tour operator counters and the baggage claim hall. The first floor is dedicated to international departures, duty-free shops and boarding lounges. The second floor is reserved for those seeing off travellers: a large glazed area allows visitors to watch take-offs.
For an international flight, arrive 2 to 3 hours before departure. Check-in and baggage drop-off generally close 1 hour before domestic flights and 1 hour 30 minutes before long-haul international flights. Customs sometimes carries out strict checks on arrival, particularly for food and plant products, which are prohibited without authorisation.
